Our tutors

Qualified teachers, checked before they teach.

Drake Tutors only uses highly qualified tutors. Over the years we have built a small team of local private tutors, chosen for how well they suit each pupil rather than for how many names we can put on a list.

What every tutor has before a first lesson.

A teaching qualification

Every tutor holds a teaching certificate, or has taught in a recognised college or university. Nobody is on the books on enthusiasm alone.

An enhanced DBS check

A current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, covering convictions, allegations and complaints held on Department of Health, Department for Education, and local and national police records.

Two reference checks

Reference and character checks completed by the office. Both have to come back before a tutor is given any work.

The right subject, not just any subject

Tutors are matched to the pupil and the specification, so a GCSE physics student gets a physics teacher rather than a general science tutor.

Protection of children is a prime concern.

Every tutor has to satisfy strict personal checks before they are sent to a family, and we would rather turn work away than send someone whose paperwork is not complete. If you ever want to see a tutor’s DBS certificate, ask them, or ask the office.

What parents say.

The tutors you sent me were great, they were really interested in my daughter’s education. I will not hesitate to contact you when my other children need help.
N. Manhire, parent, Plymouth
Excellent, reliable, punctual and confidence given to my daughter, fantastic and will recommend.
M. Davey, parent, Plymouth
The tutor was brilliant at filling the gaps in our son’s understanding, and flexible around his exam timetable. He achieved two A*s at double award science, two whole grades higher than his school predicted.
