About Us

Plymouth based Drake Tutors aim to help your child achieve their goals. For over thirty years we have provided a local service for those that require additional help. Private tutors can help students no matter what their ability or background. Tuition starts by the tutor identifying any weakness, finding the best approach for that student and working alongside parent and child setting realistic targets for improvement.

We supply personal tutors who are professionally trained in the student’s appropriate subject matter. Tutors are selected to suit each pupil’s specific needs with the aim to increase their knowledge within the chosen subject and to build their confidence.

Tuition can be used short term as a top up for exam preparation. However in reality private tuition cannot work miracles in a short time, it may mean continued regular tuition is needed to help with learning difficulties. Tuition can also be beneficial to a student who due to large class sizes receives insufficient individual attention or may help a student who is not being sufficiently challenged or stimulated at school.

Once a booking has been taken a tutor will call the parent/student within a few days and an appointment will be made. The lessons are all an hour long and can be carried out at either the pupil’s or the tutor’s home. For concentration purposes tuition should be conducted in a quiet atmosphere. Any material required is usually the responsibility of the parent.

The number of lessons are entirely the clients decision. Weekly lessons are recommended to keep continuity but fortnightly lessons are acceptable to some tutors. Payment is made directly to the tutor at the end of each lesson, either by cash or cheque made out to the tutor. There is no contract, all tutors are self-employed and this pay as you go system enables you to cease lessons at any time.

A tutor is not responsible for chaperoning minors and so we ask that a parent ensures that there is an adult on the premises at all time.

It is the tutor’s responsibility to give the parent’s sufficient notice if they have to cancel a lesson.

If the tutor arrives for a lesson and the student is not available, unless there is an acceptable valid explanation the tutor is within his/her rights to charge a reasonable fee for loss of travel and time.
